On my first day in Karuizawa, the breakfast spot I mentioned in my previous post, Mikuriya, was fully booked, so I couldn’t have lunch there. Instead, I headed to Restaurant Suju Masayuki, near the center of one of Karuizawa’s liveliest areas. The soba place next door is really good too, but the line is always way too long. I was in the mood for Japanese food that day, so I had a late lunch here instead.

An Indulgent Lunch with Plenty of Side Dishes

My tray had a heaping bowl of rice, miso soup, sashimi, simmered vegetables, okara, pickles, and ohitashi, and a plate of fried food came with it too. Apparently Karuizawa is known for its miso, and the miso served on the side really kept me reaching for more rice.

The Restaurant Is Near the Bustling Heart of Old Karuizawa

According to the restaurant’s official website, it’s right by Kyu-Karuizawa Rotary, and reservations are only available for dinner. On the map, it’s near the entrance to Kyu-Karuizawa Ginza. Around here there’s a cured-ham shop and lots of stylish restaurants, too. It was a town I couldn’t possibly enjoy fully in just one day.

Wrapping Up

Old Karuizawa is bustling, with lots of foot traffic. There’s no parking lot right in front of the restaurant, so you need to find a coin-operated lot a little farther away. Still, the food was well worth the wait.
