Stocking Up on Emergency Toilet Supplies for 50 Uses

This post is about how I stocked up on emergency toilet supplies after deciding to keep a go-bag at home. When I started thinking about putting the bag together, I wrote down what to pack in it. An emergency toilet kit was one of the items on that list.
What I like is the single-use design.

I Added a Toilet Kit to My Go-Bag List
I went ahead and bought the emergency toilet kit I’d put on the list. It’s one of the things I picked up for my go-bag. The one I have comes packed in a single box.
Some Places Lost Running Water This Summer
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the 2026 Kumamoto Earthquake struck on the evening of July 28, 2026, with a maximum recorded seismic intensity of 7. News reports said the earthquake left a total of 79,700 households across 9 cities and towns, including Yatsushiro and Uki, without running water. The agency also announced that the record-breaking rains about half a month later had been named the August 2026 Chiba Heavy Rains. According to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, flooding from those rains shut down 3 sewage treatment facilities in Chiba Prefecture.
Guidance from the City of Chiba says that power or water outages can make flush toilets unusable, and that they can’t be flushed if drainpipes or sewer infrastructure are damaged. The same guidance says portable toilet bags should be used until the toilet has been confirmed to be undamaged. I imagine a lot of people in those areas ended up using emergency toilet kits.
Single-Use Bags, with Enough for 50 Uses on Hand
The bag is discarded after each use, and a fresh one comes out next time. There’s no washing and reusing the same bag, so I can keep things sanitary for the number of uses I’ve planned for.
The City of Chiba’s guideline for stocking portable toilet supplies is about 5 uses per person per day, multiplied by the number of family members and at least 7 days, or about 140 uses for a family of 4. According to a Japan Toilet Association survey, 28.8% of respondents had emergency toilet supplies on hand in 2025, up from 22.2% in 2023. The same survey also showed that this was far below the 67.5% for flashlights and 63.4% for water. I keep enough on hand for about 50 uses.
Wrapping Up
In my case, thinking about what to put in my go-bag led me to this emergency toilet kit. Ideally, I’ll never need to use it, but keeping a supply I can count makes sense to me. That’s one item checked off my go-bag list. I’ve written about my preparations for flooding in Switching from Sandbags to Flood Barriers for Flood Protection.
