I Don't Stream, but I Still Want My Voice to Come Through in Meetings— Why I Bought an Arm-Mounted USB Mic

In this post, I’m sharing what led me—someone who’s not a YouTuber and doesn’t stream games—to buy a USB condenser microphone for online meetings. Sometimes in meetings, no sound comes through from someone else’s microphone, and seeing that happen made me think I should at least make sure my own voice came through clearly. So I chose one I could mount on an arm rather than leave permanently set up at my PC. Here’s a relaxed look at how I chose it and what it’s been like to actually use it.
The short version is that I don’t know much about audio quality, but since I started using it, no one has told me they can’t hear me, and I’m glad I bought it. According to the specs on the product page, it’s a unidirectional USB condenser microphone designed to pick up voices more easily from the front.

Other People’s Voices Sometimes Don’t Come Through, So I Made Sure Mine Would
In online meetings and similar situations, there are times when no sound comes through from the other person’s microphone. There could be all kinds of reasons, and I can’t say it’s anyone’s fault, but situations like that made me wonder, “Is my own voice coming through clearly?” I’m not a streamer, so I wasn’t looking to put together a collection of high-end gear. Even so, I wanted to make the audio on my end as reliable as I reasonably could, so I got a USB condenser microphone.
According to the product page, it’s a unidirectional microphone that readily picks up voices from the front while reducing surrounding noise from the rear and sides. The specs on the product page also list a mute button and a mic volume button on the unit, along with the ability to monitor my own voice through the headphone jack.
I Chose One I Could Mount on an Arm Instead of Leaving It Permanently Set Up at My PC
When I was choosing, I’d already decided that I didn’t want a microphone I’d leave permanently set up at my PC. I wanted to mount it on an arm, so that’s the type I chose. According to the product page, it also comes with a desktop stand, but using it the way I do now without leaving it permanently set up suits me better. As for the arm that holds the mic, I’ve found an adjustable one that can be moved so it doesn’t bump into the PC gives me a lot more freedom, which I like.
Using It — No One Has Told Me They Can’t Hear Me
I don’t know enough to talk in detail about differences in audio quality, so I can’t evaluate it on that front. Still, no one has ever told me they can’t hear me while I’ve been using this microphone. That alone means it’s done exactly what I bought it to do, and I feel like it was a good purchase.
This isn’t a choice geared toward people who want to pursue the best possible audio quality or who stream; it’s simply what I chose to make sure my own voice comes through in meetings. Of course, having this microphone can’t fix problems with the microphone on the other end.
Summary
Even though I’m not a streamer, it was worth getting a microphone to make sure my own voice comes through reliably. Mounting it on an arm rather than leaving it permanently set up at my PC has also been a good fit for me. Even though I don’t know much about audio, I honestly find it reassuring that no one has told me they can’t hear me.
