Blown Away by the WH-1000XM6's Noise Canceling

In this article, I’m writing about buying my first pair of over-ear headphones after having used nothing but Apple’s AirPods. I’d never owned any over-ear headphones before, but Sony’s noise-canceling WH-1000XM6 really intrigued me, and I ended up buying a pair. I mainly use them on my commute and for calls and meetings while working from home, so I’ll limit my thoughts to what I’ve actually experienced.
The bottom line: even though I’m not much of an audio expert, the noise canceling genuinely blew me away. The WH-1000XM6, released in 2025, is the latest model in Sony’s lineup of wireless noise-canceling headphones.

Noise Canceling Blew Me Away on My Commute
I mostly use them on my commute. This was my first time using full-fledged noise canceling with over-ear headphones.Once I put them on, the noise and chatter around me fall away, and it feels like I’ve slipped into a space of my own. Having only ever used AirPods before, the difference was obvious to me, and every time I use them on my commute, I’m genuinely impressed and think, “This is amazing.” According to Sony, they feature its newly developed “HD Noise Canceling Processor QN3” and 12 microphones dedicated to noise canceling. Sony says the QN3’s signal-processing capability is about seven times that of the QN1 in the previous model, the WH-1000XM5.
The deep bass sounds especially powerful to me. That said, I don’t know enough about audio to give a detailed assessment of the sound quality. Honestly, “I’m basically just blown away by the noise canceling” comes closest to describing how I feel.
I Also Use Them for Calls and Meetings While Working from Home
Outside of commuting, I also use them for calls and meetings while working from home. According to Sony, a total of six microphones across the left and right sides are used for calls, while its proprietary AI beamforming and AI noise reduction algorithms isolate just the voice coming from the wearer’s mouth.
According to the official description, Speak-to-Chat automatically lowers the playback volume and switches to Ambient Sound mode when the wearer starts talking. The sensitivity and the amount of time before the feature turns off can be changed in the Sony | Sound Connect app. When I use it, though, it sometimes mistakes background noise for conversation or even picks up things I say to myself. The feature itself isn’t bad; it just isn’t a good fit for how I use the headphones, so I don’t use it much.
USB Type-C and a Battery That Lasts Two Weeks
On the connectivity front, I’m simply glad it uses USB Type-C for charging. The official specs also list USB Type-C as the charging port and say the included headphone cable can be used for a wired connection.
With normal use, I can go about two weeks without charging them. The official continuous audio playback time is up to 30 hours with noise canceling on and up to 40 hours with it off. With the way I use them, I almost never have to think about charging.
Summary
As someone who had only ever used AirPods, the WH-1000XM6 was my first pair of over-ear headphones, and what impressed me most was the noise canceling. I now use them regularly on my commute and for calls and meetings while working from home. There are features I no longer use, like Speak-to-Chat, but I’ve had no problems with USB Type-C charging or battery life, and for something I bought on impulse, they’ve fit right into my daily routine.
